SOUL HUNTER - AARON DEMBSKI-BOWDEN

Reading about Space Marines who aren't staunchly FOR THE EMPEROR! was a breath of fresh air, but also just a genuinely interesting cast of damaged characters to follow. Should be required grimdark sci-fi reading for all SFF fans, not just 40K lovers!

GHAZGHKULL THRAKA: PROPHET OF THE WAAAGH! - NATE CROWLEY

Like most Ork novels, this was just a fun time following the convoluted, possibly entirely made up story of legendary ork warboss Ghazghkull, through the lens of a grot (basically a runt character). Daft (in a good way) & entertaining!

AVENGING SON - GUY HALEY

A strong opening half, but it does lose focus in the back end. Maybe one too many plot threads, however, I understand this is the launching novel of a 9 book series, so for its (few) faults, I enjoyed this exciting start to the Indomitus Era of 40K!

KING SORROW - JOE HILL

A decades spanning look at the use of power, the nature of The Greater Good, freedom, disaster, and dragon-like hoarding (figuratively and literally). 900 pages of amazing character work, tension wound tight to bursting, and Stephen King references! Incredible! 🐉

KRIEG - STEVE LYONS

In the 41st Millennium, there is only war. And WW1 soldiers throwing themselves into the deadliest situations all in the name of religious fanaticism, and possibly a weird self-sacrifice kink.

I may joke, but I did actually thoroughly enjoy this one!

VALDOR: BIRTH OF THE IMPERIUM - CHRIS WRAIGHT

It's always so cool to get these little hints into how the Imperium came to be, not as it is now, but as it was first established. This short book raises a lot of theological and philosophical questions that are really at the heart of the 40K setting.

KNOW NO FEAR - DAN ABNETT

A book of contrasts; ultimately a very good addition to the Heresy, but not without Abnett's signature indulgence into technobabble nonsense and excess. The epicness is off the scale, making this one of the most mind-blowing Heresy novels to comprehend so far!

Across dimensions, it creeps and consumes... Are you ready for your imagination to be infected?

DAEMONBREAKER - JUDE REID

The Adepta Sororitas continue to be the most evilly pious bunch of badass warrior nuns this side of the Great Rift. Chaos smashing action from page 1, and never lets up. This is the kind of fun, bloody, and OTT adventure I really needed right now!

Happy Monday!

Currently on a 40K binge. Physically reading Daemonbreaker by Jude Reid and listening to the first Ciaphus Cain novel by Sandy Mitchell.

Then going to move onto Know No Fear and Hereticus for a Dan Abnett double bill!

DAWN OF THE DEAD - SUSANNA SPARROW & GEORGE A. ROMERO

The book expands briefly on the characterisation of the main 4 characters, otherwise, if you've watched the classic movie, then you've experienced the book. A few line edits would improve this. However, this is a decent zombie action read.

ALL HALLOWS - CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN

A strange book, in terms of that 70% of this is a soap opera drama about cheating husbands & wives, & peoples secret personal lives suddenly becoming public. Then the back 30% is an unexplained, unnecessary horror? Seems like two unconnected stories smashed together

COFFIN MOON - KEITH ROSSON

A gritty, grimy, grindhouse vampire novel, filled with gory, blood, and visceral violence. John Varley is a great antagonist, up there with Barlow, Spike, Nosferatu. A slightly detached writing style stopped this from being a favourite of mine, though.

BLACK FLAME - GRETCHEN FELKER-MARTIN

The oppressively bleak atmosphere drips from this novel, as we navigate a cold, dank, and uncaring New York. This one left me feeling slimy, and I'm still trying to work out if it all meant exactly what I thought it did. An A24 horror movie in novel form.

THE LIFE OF CHUCK - STEPHEN KING

Instantly my favourite King novella, this is beautiful, inspiring, bittersweet, insightful, and overflowing with the joy of living. It shows how we are all valuable, no matter how large, or how humble. Need to watch the movie adaption ASAP!

WHAT FEASTS AT NIGHT - T. KINGFISHER

More gothic action fun with Alex Easton! A bit more supernatural this time around, with a more ethereal threat. But we get further glimpse's into Alex's solider past, and the horrors inflicted there. Looking forward to the third adventure soon!

WHAT MOVES THE DEAD - T. KINGFISHER

A fungi-filled trip into madness, with creepy hares, a dank manor home, and more gothic atmosphere than you can shake Poe's cane at! Easton is a great protagonist, not your typical nervy gothic POV. Highly recommended for spooky season and beyond!

THE LONG WALK - STEPHEN KING (RICHARD BACHMAN)

How can a story about a group of 100 boys walking across New England be as engrossing, enthralling, and exciting as this?! Can't wait to see the movie this Friday now! The Long Walk is amazing!

NO REST FOR THE WICKED - RACHEL LOUISE ADAMS

A deep, twisty family drama set against the backdrop of real-life Halloweentown. Dark secrets, buried memories, murder mysteries, a town corrupted to the core. The twists in this had me by the throat. A very exciting mystery thriller!

BREATHE IN, BLEED OUT - BRIAN MCAULEY

A murder mystery slasher set in a desert wellness retreat, with more fake spiritual treatments, cultural appropriation, and brutal kills than you can shake a rusty pickaxe at. This one is a whole lot of fun, and the cover is magnificent!

ACQUIRED TASTE - CLAY MCLEOD CHAPMAN

The strangest collection of stories about putting weird things in your mouth, amongst other appetites, CMcC has curated a selection of truly funny, dark, spellbinding, and downright bonkers stories I've ever read in horror fiction! Loved it!

SECRET LIVES OF THE DEAD- TIM LEBBON

An exciting thriller that does everything it sets out to do perfectly fine. Secrets can set people towards a fate they never wanted. I wish we'd spent this idea solely with the antagonist (the most interesting charcater) instead of shared with 3 other dull ones.

KILL YOUR DARLING - CLAY MCLEOD CHAPMAN

Grief horror isn't normally my thing, but when Clay does something, he always hits it out of the park. Grief is a destructive, masochistic tool here, and it's a story that is just plain sad throughout.
