they/them ☆ likes KyoAni ☆ enjoys running ☆ trying my best each day~☆
tbh i wasn't huge at first on them going for minimalist styled covers, but seeing it in person i do dig the 3D effect more

this kumirei illustration is gonna be living rent-free in my head for the next week

relevant too, but it made me remember kojima said within the kimi no iro guidebook it was yamada that requested him to create more unique-looking mobs. unsurprisng that the setting is deeply important for her to craft since k-on s2. anyway this 6-sided BD tray really highlights the lovely classmates

horiguchi's skill as a designer has always been at its best when it comes to mundane characters, yet eye-catching enough that it increases curiosity to know More about them. also displays the confidence boost in making a much more memorable setting, as it's something yamada would have pushed for

one thing that stands out a lot in k-on s2 is that the school feels instantly more characterised as a setting, but it strongly extends to the mob designs themselves. the classmates have a much more tangible presence than before due to their more unique features that add a lot more variety/character

also ritsu's younger brother's friend has to be one of the funniest jumpscares, not just because boys in k-on are rare, but because the drawing of him here is so blatantly horihori. i know i have seen this eye shape used on another male character for one of the many light novels she illustrated for
September 2, 2025 at 12:22 AM
her work here was really instrumental for convincingly conveying the mood of the episode, since there are so many nuanced and subtle expressions, but it's just such a good looking episode throughout. honestly think its her best work in k-on now...
September 2, 2025 at 12:19 AM
the volume of the hair in the profile shots is some of the best she's ever drawn... i love the ritsu ones esp when she's spacing out and getting self-conscious over her appearance due to misinterpreting mio's lyrics as a love letter lol. it's great to see yamada's drawing of the first shot too
September 2, 2025 at 12:12 AM
i don't think even her s2 episodes come close to this tbh, it's simply that good
September 2, 2025 at 12:06 AM
winter lends itself well to contemplative and melancholic moods, but this one feels a step further in execution thanks to horihori, and i think this is probably her best-looking ep? like ever? the drawings are insanely well polished, but it also has a lot of her loose cartoony charm to add levity
September 2, 2025 at 12:03 AM
got to #13 on rewatch and it's easily the best s1 episode. the avan is such a masterclass in setting the tone and underlying anxieties that will lead to the girls' separation a bit later on in the episode. it's interesting too since it feels like an early precursor to the tone yamada sets in s2 #01
September 1, 2025 at 11:55 PM
i wish nsy got to contribute a bit more art to k-on during s1, and 1 more episode during the series' more loose period... though he was understandably busy with haruhi at the time, and that's fine anyway because he was cooking up kino there too as CAD on the '09 series & official art he contributed

the ep right after this, handled by m. takahashi is also quite reflective of her approach. the faces are just a bit more elongated, and the characters have a slightly more mature look, probably since she often likes to denote the lower lip's bottom shadow, even in her own official art this is common
August 14, 2025 at 7:46 AM
the nsy drawing of all time in this regard
August 14, 2025 at 7:42 AM
the tactility of the believably dishevelled hair is extremely high
August 14, 2025 at 7:41 AM
it wildly stands out right after horiguchi's adorably blobby, and insanely cartoony expressive range she displayed in #01. can't talk about nishiya tho without mentioning his insanely volumetric hair and fabric shapes. this is the type of shit that makes me go "gguuu, uuuhhh, its so peak,,,,,,"
August 14, 2025 at 7:38 AM
nishiya's commitment to anatomical detail always manages to fit in, in such appealing ways with other people's designs. this time with the more organic faces: the further protruding cheekbones and rounded chins in many angles emphasise realism more, but still highlight their cute, feminine charm

izumi toudou doesn't credit artists for magazine hanken but those finger joints are obvious in the first one (and everything else really, lol)
July 30, 2025 at 11:56 PM
this piece is from the more recent BD box but it displays he's always been an incredibly consistent artist since his character design debut. all the core fundamental aspects haven't really changed much
July 30, 2025 at 11:54 PM
i don't really watch precure nowadays, so it's been a while i have looked at his lovely character art, but it was a nice reminder he's still one of my fave artists ever
July 30, 2025 at 11:47 PM
haven't seen mamotte shugogetten, but i fell down a rabbit hole going through loads of ueno's art for it, and ofc it owns hard. his eye-catching varying line thickness, the appealing simplification of fabric creases, cute short faces that he often defaults to, his cute and nuanced expression work
July 30, 2025 at 11:40 PM
it's the type of episode you can't really pull off as easily without strong setting design and art direction, which of course this show fundamentally has in spades. so far, it's easily my favourite episode of the year
July 23, 2025 at 1:40 AM
they got my ass good with this shot (x.com/flappuu/stat...)
July 23, 2025 at 1:36 AM
love the emulation of classic shoujo artwork lol, it reminded me of one of her lucky star magazine illustrations. anyway, rewatching this ep cemented it as one of the best-looking episodes in the show, which already has the unfair combo of kigami/ueno. horiguchi forever one of the best to ever do it
