🚗 For the third entry in our August Reading Series, we turn to the world’s largest EV market: China.

🔌 “Smoothing the way,” by @chigao.bsky.social, explores how smart charging in Zhejiang Province can ease grid pressure and reduce costs and emissions.

Virtual Power Plants in China - some reflections after talking with VPP entrepreneurs and researchers in China.

What’s Working:

National policies strongly support VPPs, attracting substantial investment.

Certain pilot cities are thinking big, embracing VPPs as part of their industrial policy.

Why are Virtual Power Plants in China not scaled up yet? The lack of comprehensive funding to compensate for the full spectrum of values they provide plays a big role. In our new paper, Fritz Kahrl and I proposed a couple ways to make VPPs work better in China: www.raponline.org/knowledge-ce...
A full-stack compensation model for virtual power plants: Uniting the top-down and local-level approaches
Virtual power plants bring value to the electricity system but need sustainable scaling. RAP examines a full-stack compensation mechanism to do so.

New article! China has the largest fleet of coal power plants in the world and the policies that govern how these plants earn revenue has long-lasting implications for the country’s energy transformation prospects and global climate goals.

I went to the Channel Islands National Park last weekend for a backpacking trip and I spotted some island foxes, found only on these islands. They are the cutest fur balls I've seen!

In 2002, there were only 62 of them left. Now? More than 3000. The conservation story is truly remarkable.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Industrial electrification is THE key lever to decarbonise industry.

But without policy support it won't happen at required speed.

That's why we developed a 10-point action plan for Europe.🧵

A 2-year Swedish study shows that heat pump owners save 20% on their energy bill by using a smart thermostat. Those with dynamic electricity contracts save a little more (24%) by using smart controls to avoid peak periods.

The EV time-of-use rate in Hainan Province, China has become too effective.

Driven by the lower rate, 30% of charging now occurs between 12-2 AM, creating a new peak around midnight at 630 MW, which constitutes 7% of the overall peak.

Price ratio could be refined. Try TOU + automatic control?

Max Dupuy (@cleartiming.bsky.social) and I have a blog out that explores the nuanced world of China's power sector, especially the impact of the new coal power capacity payment mechanism, and how to transform it in a way that could potentially support the clean energy transition. bit.ly/4begk9m (1/5
