On Nov. 16, 1776, Fort Washington fell after a major British and Hessian assault. Among the attacking forces were the Royal Welch Fusiliers, whose light infantry helped break through the American defenses. The loss was a major setback for Washington’s army and a key moment in the New York campaign.
