Plan Commission approved a proposed 36-story mixed-use building at 1600 N. LaSalle Drive in Lincoln Park. Led by Fern Hill Cos., the project includes 349 mixed-income apartments and ground-floor retail space.

The Rector Building housed several financial institutions in the 20th century, including Bell Savings & Loan, which installed the building's iconic "weather bell" sign. A $64 million adaptive reuse project planned for the building will restore key architectural features.

The Loop's Rector Building, 79 W. Monroe St., received a preliminary landmark recommendation from the Landmarks Commission today. Built in 1905 with a 1923 addition, the Jarvis Hunt-designed building combines classical details with modernist Prairie School elements.
