I think it must have been the Monsters series from Crestwood House. Mostly horror, but I do distinctly remember The Invisible Man and The Blob, which I think count as sci-fi.
Fifteen books arranged five by three. The covers of each of them are a black and white photo from a horror movie, with the title of the book in orange.
