Day 1 of #PSETI2025 went really well. I gave a talk about a series of projects lead by @setiinstitute.bsky.social and Breakthrough Listen scientist and had a fun time exploring communication and hazard response. Looking forward to day 2. Image: @astrowright.bsky.social kicking us off.

Can someone tell me the logic of why the hotel has the towel rack inside the shower so the dry towels get wet when the water is turned on?

Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught. ~J.C. Watts

I discovered this comic 11 years ago, and it is still one of my favorites about research.

Quote for today:
"Chemistry has been termed by the physicist as the messy part of physics, but that is no reason why the physicists should be permitted to make a mess of chemistry when they invade it."

This sounds really interesting.
For folks coming to #aas247… I’ve always wanted to have a Special Session where we do “PechaKucha” or “Ignite” style talks.

Anyone interested?!

Can you narrow it down to a topic or genre?

Now that I am working with the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa, I think I will start incorporating this image Steve took in New Zealand into my presentations. Isn't he cute? The group scout. Also, my student in Taiwan made this image showing the placement of all the antennas, and I love it.

But we DO want to seriously know if it is aliens. This is real science. That’s why my colleagues at @setiinstitute.bsky.social have been using the Allen Telescope Array to observe I3/ATLAS, searching for narrow band radio emission. We talked about it last week

Is I3/ATLAS an alien spaceship? Right now we don’t have any evidence it is, but let’s talk about it a bit…

I went out with some colleagues to the @thenrao.bsky.social #VLA last week to replace the storage on the @setiinstitute.bsky.social #COSMIC machine. We have a fresh 1.8PB of storage on the back end. Let the science begin!! #astronomy #SETI #technosignature

This is something I feel very strongly about. It is important to listen to others, even when we don't want to.

Oh, and spending the rest of the day making a single plot for a paper.
Get a PhD in astronomy, they said. It will be fun, they said. However, no one tells you that in reality, you will spend an hour trying to remove an extra arrow from a diagram without ruining everything else. 😅

I have been enjoying the week in Germany to learn more about how the #SKA project is going. Today, I talked to people about our Technosignature work we do to prepare for the new telescope. #SETI #astrobiology #technosignatures #astronomy
