Three EP’s in and Ameonna have made three straight hits. The Birth of Death was a nice surprise to be met with on Valentine’s Day, continuing the long time love I’ve had for both Alex Koehler and Pablo Viveros’ talents in music.

“AM/PM” - American Nightmare
My parents fell in love and all I got was life
And all I ever wanted was to not be alone!
I’ve been wearing this new outfit called "quit while you're ahead"…
Your smiles the end,
Your eyes are the end.

“Death Walking Terror” - Cannibal Corpse
I am the blood you seek to spill!
I am you inner drive to kill!
Dark inspiration, a moral failure…
Created by the death walking terror.
Your hands have done my bidding well,
Your hideous dreams now reality!

Bleeding Through has been doing their stuff for a long while now and they still kick ass doing it. Nine is a continuation of the high energy sound they’ve cultivated, pulling in other old metalcore veterans to armor them up for glory.

When you get a combined feature squad of Twitching Tongues, Initiate and Deafheaven, that alone should indicate how good of a time this. Metalcore at its most ferocious yet expansive with hints of doom and black metal.

“When it Betrays” - Church Tongue
I’ve shed my skin.
It betrays, it calls my bluff.
I can’t go back again.
This cage of misery,
Have we been here before?
Wading through my own debris,
An endless fucking war.

“The House of Shame” - Lacuna Coil
Burn me reducing the stigma
Born to live in this house of shame
While I dig the grave on my path to find faith
You weren't there while I was dying
You're the reason I'm feeling so deranged

As I’ve immersed myself into more doom these past few years, I’m always taken by bands that make it sound so ‘pretty’. Very few do it as well as Hangman’s Chair. They have a talent for making their guitars sound submerged yet surreal.

So both of them coming together to make a song this good is just a full on fucking feast.

“Man and Beast” - The Crimson Armada
So we return to the ancient way
Before fools were unafraid
When the mockery
Would not make the foolish feel unashamed
Thosе who imitate
Like brainless apеs
They clinch their first and smash the glass and beat their chest

At its heart, this is some of the muddiest sludge metal that you can find, but that is not only what it is. There’s a sort of hard rock gallop that follows it, breathing life with a bit of whiskey blues in between the avalanches.

Sometimes you just need to get violent and Volatile Ways lives up to that title and their name. With a death metal heart and a beatdown hardcore bite, this band put on one hell of a debut. 24 minutes of pure hatred and viciousness.

Now THIS is a blast (beat) from the past right here. I can’t even remember the last time I listened to the Crimson Armada, but it feels like they never left. This EP is like a time capsule straight from 2008 and it feels so good.

“I Do My Crosswords in Pen” - On Broken Wings
Ink bleeds deeper when pressed hard,
Soaks through paper and leaves stains on the table.
You don't look how I pictured…
You don't look quite how I remember.
I'll tell myself
"I cannot surround me"

“Shroud of Lethe” - Khemmis
How can I atone and wash away the pain?
I can’t trust the memories leading me astray…
Still I hold on to what I know are lies.
Written in stone,
Digging in the snow….
And my hands are frostbitten and raw.
No longer cold…

Obscura is a band where I either really dig their album or it does next to nothing for me: this is the occasion of the former. The guitar melodies on this thing are stellar, matching the writing and the atmosphere these aliens aim for.

This is the best Impending Doom has sounded in a long while. 11 minutes of pure holy rage, loud as hell, heavy as heaven. I’ve always had a soft spot for this band and this eerie, wrathful sound is one of the reasons why.

By now, Jinjer have fully harnessed their formula, and while Duél doesn’t have that darkness of Wallflowers, it is a continuation of their energy and emotion. This band knows their sound and performs it so well in an album that flows and slithers.

“Psycho Killer” - Talking Heads
You start a conversation, you can't even finish it.
You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything.
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed…
Say something once, why say it again?

“Bludgeoned to Death” - Suicide Silence
How could you think that I was joking?
But I'm not!
Be nothing,
Be strong without me.
But still, curses crumble as we let this happen!
We can't let this happen…
As we all come down.
WE CAN’T.
