after that, just a long, reasonably straight walk on the moon, to where LOSERS can take a funivia down (structure barely visible at peak in 1st pic) or crazy people like me can surf scree down a 30% grade for a frightening distance (best appreciated by looking back UP, afterwards...)

another technical bit (toeholds on a cliff face, hold onto the cable -- not TOO bad). a pretty little grotto of moss at eye level in the cliff along the way. Rif Boé!! where finally I got my eggs, speck, roast potatoes, weissbier, and ... happily perused the grappa list!!

another technical bit (toeholds on a cliff face, hold onto the cable -- not TOO bad). a pretty little grotto of moss at eye level in the cliff along the way. Rif Boé!! where finally I got my eggs, speck, roast potatoes, weissbier, and ... happily perused the grappa list!!
at this point, the pics get a little boring, to be honest. nothing but loose rock in all directions (but uphill in the one you have to go 😭). the panorama shot doesn't do the distant vistas justice, alas. BUT, that is the top of the massif!

yeah, so we need to get on top of that NEXT massif in the far background (groan). nothing for it but to saddle up and climb again. a longing look back at the lake (pond, really, after a dry summer) imagining the beer. comforted by an alpine flower that's managed to make a home in the rocks.

good news! only 2.5 more hours to Rif. Boé. we've arrived to Rif. Pisciadu, built by the alpine club of Bologna (and Laura and I are Bolognese!) But, brutal sister-in-law permits only a biology stop (I sooooo wanted a weissbier 😛). We snap a victory shot with alpine lake in background and...

nothing for it but to climb. and climb. and climb. switchbacks in the scree. again, good to occasionally look BACK to appreciate how much altitude has been gained. happily, the canyon is shaded, as it's been hot in the Alto Adige this week.

as the vegetation begins to disappear, we cross a major drainage channel that must carry a lot of snowmelt every year. the entrance to a slot canyon begins to come into view (nephew, far in front (goddam youth) turning to encourage progress. last shot is the UP we have to do in the canyon.
