The storm howled through the open chambers of the temple of Janna, a benevolent maelstrom that cleaved through the pervasive blanket of Gray that usually inhabited the crumbling walls. Maryam shivered and pulled her threadbare robes closer to herself as she made the rounds to check on the candles. In all the years that she had been caretaker to the, never had the wind blown the candles out; a benediction that was granted by Janna herself. However, she had a duty to the temple and to the faithful to ensure that the small sparks of devotion stayed lit despite the ache in her bones. She puttered around slowly, so engrossed in her task that she almost missed the lone figure sitting in quiet contemplation. “This is no weather for even the most faithful to be out here,” Maryam said kindly to the figure. “Come, child. Let's get you out of the storm lest you catch your death.” The figure rose gracefully - tall and svelte, her simple but well maintained clothes fluttering in the wind. A bright blue eye looked at Maryam from under the hood of the robe, and the woman in front of her gave her a small smile in return. “And yet you tend to the faithful, alone,” she said in Maryam's native Shuriman, a hint of the polished consonants of topside peeking through the rough burr of the dialect. It was unexpected, this far down in the sumps. Most topsiders strayed no further than the Temple to Janna in the Entresol level, but Maryam would not deny a follower, no matter where they hailed from. “Ah, but my life is sworn in service, and there is much to do,” Maryam said lightly, leading the woman towards the warmth of enclosed walls. A gentle hand stopped her, and she looked up questioningly to see a shy look cross the woman's face as a gloved hand held out a wrapped bundle of robes towards her. The woman smiled once more. “That there is, amma. Please, let me help.”

Their walk to the shimmer factory every night was the same. Three steps, one cracked, into busted up pavement that passed for a sidewalk. Lightposts, once bright and evenly spaced, paid for by some richer-than-average do-gooder, lay broken across the sidewalk, with a few survivors struggling to stand. It was a dim walk even when the sun was up, and only their familiarity with the area got them from home to the factory with relative ease in the dark. The only difference between one night and the next were the missing posters pasted to the remaining lightposts. They were the closest thing to news they got in this neighborhood. Every morning, as the light fought its way down into the Lanes, they checked to see which neighbor, which friend, which enemy had vanished overnight. Missing posters were never removed, only covered up with more, till the lightposts were thick with people long forgotten. Their own parents were some of those people. It was the closest they got to a proper burial. Three steps, avoiding the crack, to the busted up pavement. They froze on the last one, foot hovering in midair. Something was different. The lightposts had been replaced. The light, brighter than that of the sun, cast eerie shadows between the cracked pavement. Stepping out of the shadows felt wrong; they were exposed, vulnerable to whom—or what—ever might pass by. Most upsetting were the missing posters. Like a graveyard paved over, every single one has been removed. The last pictures of their parents, gone. In their place were heavy, blue posters with gold writing. They couldn’t read, but even they could recognize the ancient insignia at the top of each poster: Two ornate keys, locked in an eternal duel.

It took all of ten seconds for her to realize a tectonic shift had taken place in the three months since her last visit to Zaun. Instead of the typical gang of slimeballs, on the dock stood a lone figure, tall and draped in a cloak of deep navy. “Well that doesn’t bode well.” Rafen muttered as they slipped closer to the docks. “Business as usual, I’ll deal with our new friend.” She said before vaulting onto the deck, putting herself between the stranger and the city. The figure turned to face her with machined steel precision and a gaze that sent ice through her spine. Several more pairs of worn boots landed behind her, the crew hastily tying off the ship and forming up behind her. An explosion of bubbles from the opposite side of the dock caused everyone but the stranger and Sarah to jump out of their skin. “Captain Fortune?” The woman’s voice was clean and astute, still Zaunite, but unlike any of the rough and tumble dialects associated with Piltover's Undercity. “Who’s asking?” She replied. Her smile was easy, but she thumbed the hammer on one of her guns all the same. The bubbling intensified, and Sarah’s eyes flicked to a spot where the water churned like it was boiling. For a second she swore she saw a hand break the surface. “A new business associate," The stranger said, producing a crisp envelope from inside her cape. "I have a proposal I'd like to discuss with you." Sarah stepped froward to take the papers, when her smile faded. “What happened to Reg?” The stranger’s lips curled into a gash of a smile. The bubbles stopped.

“Storm’s comin’.” Sarah Fortune shifted to the side wordlessly to make space on the narrow stern of the Syren. Rafen settled in, leaning on the railing beside her. “You feel it too, don’t you?” “Yeah,” Sarah said with a sigh, tipping her head up towards the sky. Rafen grunted, and she grinned. “What, no advice for your captain this time around?” He shrugged, the movement jostling her arm. “Nothing you’d want to hear.” The admission settled like the stench of rotting sea serpent guts in the air between them, souring the grin on her face. No, she did not want to hear the fact that she’d been refusing to admit to herself. Not when she was this close. Regardless. “Gather the crew at sundown.” Rafen hummed pensively. “You sure?” “We’re not turning back,” she admitted. “But I’ll make it work.” He laughed softly. “Aye, cap’n,” he drawled, sincere and fond. “You always do.” She flashed him a grateful smile, tipping her hat before she stalked off to her cabin to plot. The board was set, the pieces were in play, and Sarah Fortune was willing to roll the dice and weather the storm. The door slammed shut behind her, blocking out the clear skies and the ever growing silhouette of Piltover and Zaun on the horizon.

Margot turned the letter over in between her fingers, letting the edges of it just barely cut her skin. An invitation. From that girl. Calling for a meeting of the barons. Margot briefly entertained the idea of declining, or, more audaciously, not responding and not showing up at all to the girl’s summons. She had enough pride as a baron to at least ponder the thought. But…curiosity hadn’t killed Margot yet. The girl was new. And she’d even managed to upset Chross, that old meatbag. That earned her a point in Margot’s book, at least. *And* the girl had written a special message, just for her. Her handwriting was impeccably neat, almost insultingly penned with an elegant effort Margot was unused to seeing down in the Lanes; that, alongside the girl’s promise to Margot made the invitation just a little bit intriguing. How could she possibly say no to such a deal, even when it was with the devil? “Millie,” Margot said aloud to her lieutenant, standing across from her. “Looks like I’ve got a date with tall, dark, and handsome. Let’s go.”

They’ve got a new fan, apparently. Which is odd. New fans don’t come along all that often. The band’s been playing the same venue every month for the last three years; sometimes more than once a month if no new talent made themselves available (or at the very least worthy of accompanying Friday evenings at the bar, poker games and all). By now, everyone knows them; everyone's heard them. Records don’t sell so much these days, no one asks for autographs anymore— But oh, their seeming insignificance doesn’t seem to stop their shit from being stolen. It’s as strange as it is a pain in the ass. It isn’t like it’s particularly *nice* gear, but hell, it’s gear all the same, and losing it is a real headache. Money down the drain. Money’s all anyone’s after, they suppose. Which makes it even stranger when they find it returned the next day, replaced with newer, nicer equipment. Their guitars, restrung. Their microphones, shiny and un-dented. Their cables, now complete with gold-tipped contact points. Accompanying the bounty, a note:
