REFERENDUMS ARE GOOD FOR ALBERTA Referendums are good, they give Albertans the opportunity to directly voice their opinions on important issue and ensure their perspectives are heard. Referendums empower Albertans to decide on priorities important to them. In 2022 Alberta enacted the Citizen Initiative Act. This law said it gave Albertans the right to initiate their own referendums, but there was a big problem - the referendum petition thresholds were virtually impossible to achieve. But this spring, Bill 54 amended this law, and now the thresholds, while very difficult, are no longer impossible to achieve. Some want to veto what Albertans can vote on. They do not trust Albertans, fearing there may be referendums on things they do not want. But isn’t that the point of a citizen-initiated referendum? Politicians reliably will do what they want, but what about what their citizens want? Referendums provide Albertans with opportunities to inform themselves with the truth on a matter. Truth produces hope. The more truth, the better. Alberta is a land of freedom and prosperity. Albertans must be vigilant to keep it that way. Referendums are one way for Albertans to do so. Referendums are good for Alberta!
