Rock and a hard place, overseas US voter edition. I put my California special measures ballot in the mail and two days later, Canada Post went on immediate strike.

Another good in-residence week comes to an end. I sustained my Review Board and made some significant headway on the scope of my project.

Nearly 20 years ago, I decided high school teaching wasn’t my vocational calling. Now here I am, accepting a part-time position teaching Bible (alongside pastoring and PhD studies part-time).
I don’t think College-aged Chelsey was wrong; she’s just been refined. 😉

Guess we should have waited to open that First Home Savings Account until after we found out who won the US election…

After two PhD writing block plans were thwarted this week, I was finally able to outline the project and write one page this afternoon thanks to a cancelled Latin class.
This last stage of returning from Maternity Leave has perhaps been the hardest, but here we are, a year later, doing it.

I've been reading Mark Glanville's new preaching text, Preaching in a New Key and have really enjoyed it. After Seminary (15+ yrs ago), I used the method I learned there, but that didn't last much past the 1st year or 2. Having a text this has given me better structure and freedom to do what I do. 🤓

I am reading on the church in the Roman Empire for sermons on Colossians 3. Ben Witherington's explanation that mercy & pity were "pathological emotions that violated the reciprocity cycle" & were thus shunned in 1-2 century is sounding TOO similar to the "empathy is a sin" life infecting us today.

I just ate a cookie while sitting in the sunshine while I read the news. I felt less angst and overwhelm than I usually do. Was it the cookie or the sunshine or the magical combination of the two?

It feels like a Lamentations sort of Lent.

This book was my companion through a sermon series a number of years ago.

Read these lines from John O’Donahue’s “From the Interim Time” at a meeting today & I am still thinking about them:

“The path you took to get here has washed out, / The way forward is still concealed from you.

‘The old is not old enough to have died away; / The new is still too young to be born.’”
