Today would have marked 52 years of Roe as the law of the land. But Donald Trump packed the Supreme Court with anti-abortion extremists to get it overturned.

This week, he cut off access to reproductiverights.gov.

We must keep fighting for women’s rights.

I do believe that TikTok is a useful platform, but a very unimportant reason that I want it to live on is seeing Gen Z discover and make fun of artists that us Millennials inexplicably made popular in the 2010s. See: the Trey Songz discourse.

Great new tool from @propublica.org. In a shock to no one, Iowa's public schools are 73.4% white and private schools are 82.6% white. I'll be curious to see how these data change once they reflect Iowa's private school voucher program going into effect.

My current state senator and recent mayor are really setting the bar for idiocracy. It’s not enough that Ankeny was already a Moms for Liberty hotbed.

“We’re going to see more attacks on providers.”

I wrote about new efforts to restrict abortion — especially in Texas, where it is already illegal, and whose legislative session began this week.

These states already restrict abortion. Their legislatures could push it even further.
Donald Trump has been inconsistent in saying how his administration would approach the issue, but state lawmakers aren’t waiting for him.

One edit to the TikTok ban: Please just let us have Ruth Codd. You can kill the rest of the app, but leave her be.

I wonder what the great Barbara Mack would have to say about this.
Gannett, owner of the Des Moines Register, won’t publicly commit to paying legal costs for Ann Seltzer, the pollster being sued by Trump.

This is ominous, especially in light of the capitulation last week by Disney/ABC, which is vastly better resourced than Gannett.

A cool use of AI to help short-staffed newsrooms pick up on stories and sources. I'm curious about timeliness and thoroughness, though. I used to cover education. School boards are not always the best at quickly uploading meeting minutes, and many are not detailed.
In 2023, we launched our Product & AI Studio to explore the use of generative AI in local newsrooms. Over the past year, @chalkbeat.org has used AI to uncover stories hidden in public school board meeting minutes.

Interesting reporting out of my old home, Coos Bay, Oregon. And with a familiar, vocal character - Rob Taylor. (Thought you'd want to read this, @larryiii.bsky.social)
A piece of ambitious Oregon reporting that most media outlets missed by freelancer Theo Whitcomb: "A white supremacist wants to buy part of Coos Bay's Port."
