Speaking as a state-school French and German teacher of 30+ years, I say 'Bravo, Sir'! It is so heartening, and refreshing, to hear a high profile Brit proudly speaking (so well) in German. Our government needs to be raising the profile of languages within the curriculum, not phasing them out.
