Letterboxd review of Belfast (2021) which states “A film which explores how events such as the beginnings of “the troubles” in Ireland during the early 1970s can affect a family while still holding it together, Belfast centres this dynamic in the eyes of Buddy whose perspective as a child during this time only aids it’s black and white imagery. Though its setting is very central in the areas in which Buddy spends most of his time and the villains of the story who are very clearly in the wrong could be seen as simplistic, this is perhaps the point as often the worlds and perspectives of children can lack the complexity around such complicated events such as those occurring in the film. In this sense, Belfast thrives as a film which holds its sense of family and community to its chest regardless of where they are in the world and where they must go.”
