Fix Me Up ohtangerines, thisreader Summary: Ed is a handyman, living in a small-ish town and living the day to day of handymanning – drain clogs, lock changes, paint touch-ups, the uzhe. He’s self-employed and only takes jobs from clients recommending him on, which keeps him in control of his schedule. He is an artist, but keeps the art within the confines of his own home (or a special something for Mama Teach from time to time). There’s a routine to his life that goes generally undisturbed. Stede is new to town and becomes something of an enigma to Ed. He catches Ed’s eye on an unsuspecting walkabout the neighborhood with his pup, and suddenly Ed finds himself in the pull that is Stede Bonnet, Homeowner Extraordinaire (emphasis on the extra). When Stede finds himself in need of a capable handyman, it's Ed's number he calls. Stede, however, has secrets of his own--which Ed uncovers job-by-job. Don’t worry, Ed is totally normal about this guy.

Somehow he assumed it would come with questioning strangers and interruptions and something stopping him entirely. A missed bus. A closed road. A car crash. The universe seems wholly uninterested in one Ed Teach, however, and he finds himself standing at the weather-worn trailhead sign, images depicting safety hazards one would expect to encounter. Sharp drops. Loose rocks. Bears. The uzhe. It’s a rarely-used trail, purposefully selected for exactly that reason. Not trying to ruin some family’s Sunday outing. It heads due east, distinctly away from the enormous lake he visited twice as a kid. Doesn’t want memories of his mother clouding his judgment now. Plus, it’s not like the water holds an escape for him anymore anyway. Playing pirates, dreaming of a life of intrigue on the high seas? That was fun at 8. Leave it where it lies, Teach. He’s slammed with a memory of a dream with Stede. Of racing leaf boats down their [rainbow] stream, chasing along the bank as the boats dipped and swirled in the currents, taking on water and tipping precariously over rushing waterfalls. Of waking up the next morning and naming those boats, drawing pictures and imagining backstories of pirate explorers, conquering ocean waves and terrible storms at Stede’s side. The world had felt so big then. The possibilities had felt so tangible. He felt like he could have reached out and grabbed Stede by the hand, pulled him right out of that world and into…what? Your world? Hardly. Even then, Ed knew Stede didn’t belong in his world. Ed’s world was harsh and angry. Stede deserved softness and color. Stede was safer left waiting in Ed’s subconscious, ready when Ed needed gentle joy on another night. But the possibilities could have been real, his inner voice helpfully supplies. “Fuck that,” Ed tells whatever tree creatures might be listening.

“Stede?” He’s wild-eyed, debating how much he should share, how actually insane she might take him for. Because it’s one thing, right, to mention having had a recurring dream from childhood recur. It’s entirely another thing for said person from that dream to be real. (It’s probably also another entire thing for visions to happen in the middle of making an orange juice selection, but one thing at a time.) The world shimmers around him again, much like it did in the shop, the room around him blurring for a moment into wilderness, trees and mountains and an oddly familiar old bench appearing where there usually are none of these – and there he is again, standing right on the edge of one such mountain. “Ed!” Stede reaches out, afraid but determined, before everything resets. “Stede!” Mary repeats herself, more forcefully this time, and it blinks Stede back to the present. “What on earth is going on?” “I– I honestly don’t know, Mary.” He turns toward the patio door, quick-steps in the direction of sunshine. Maybe he just needs to sit outside in some fresh air. Maybe he’s spent too many days pent up in his bedroom, burning his eyes with blue light and doomscrolls. What is it the internet calls it? Touching grass? Yes, that must be it. He needs to touch some grass. Maybe even literally.
