I've yet to watch gravity falls but agreed on OtGW. And yeah, I think this might be the best queer rep show for kids that I know of.

Really makes you wonder what it would've been had they not had CN looming over their shoulders at every turn haha

Steven wanted Spinel to stay but she didn't feel in the right place, so while I do agree the diamonds suck, I didn't see it as getting rid of her. Rather they liked her and she chose them

In a narrative sense it did feel pretty forced that's for sure...

Anyway it's all pretty subjective in the end

Spinel taking the game so literally is part of what reminds the diamonds so much of pink. Her childish innocence and playfulness. But Spinel takes it to the extreme.

She was literally a toy made for Pink so all she could do is play no matter what, until breaking point.

Pink was often portrayed as being child-like and selfish in nature before her turning on the diamonds, which is what redeems Pink as a character.

But this happens long before those events.

So to me the backstory fits pretty well. It's fucked but I don't think it's beyond the old Pink.
