Well, I use a combination of smoothing processes: I use a 40G spiral needle first, then I trim stray fibers with small cuticle scissors, and then i finish with ironing. If it doesn't smooth out enough the first round, I simply repeat until it's to my liking. :)

The multi-needle tool is necessary to properly tighten up poly fil. You can use poly fil, but it will take more work with a single needle because poly fil fibers are different from wool fibers. I love working with poly fil personally since it's cheaper than wool and it is solid with enough work.
