Either Ukraine becomes a free country - or it is incorporated into Russia.

There is no middle ground. What you are saying is "Russia should be allowed win".

That is not a good thing.

Put another way: if she were the type of person who would put a medal before the potential for peace & democracy in Venezuela- would she have deserved to get the Nobel peace prize in the first place?
January 17, 2026 at 5:47 AM
Why is she an idiot? She wants peace & democracy in Venezuela.

She was excluded from consideration by Trump because she wouldn't give him her gold medal.

Is a gold medal really more important than peace & democracy in Venezuela to a person deserving a nobel prize?

That's not it: Trump is simply taking the next step in his escalation to invoking the insurrection act (& suspending democracy).

This is the bit where he puts "the state officials are insurrectionists" as a "fact on the ground" - he's fully aware they aren't- he's saying it to get to end democracy.

Satisfying Russia isn't a relevant or meaningful consideration.

of the EU if/when possible.

What about an "EU-lite" which is exactly the same as the EU- but with a "we, by majority decision, can kick you out/suspend your rights/do whatever if you misbehave like Hungary" clause? With the idea being that the "kick you out if you misbehave" clause is subsequently introduced to the rest

No. They just want enough pretext to declare martial law & suspend democracy.

They know they are in power - they are however also aware that that power is temporary - unless they suspend democracy.

Yeah,if you hit the iceberg head on, you make a hole in the front of your ship.If you try to avoid it too late, you open up the side of your ship like a tin can. Because the ship can take a certain amount of damage and still float, hitting it head on is ok.Ripping out your sides like a tincan however

From a Brit perspective, it would have also been immediately obviously inferior to EU membership also - which already ruled it out.
January 6, 2026 at 11:46 AM
For the benefit of its own citizenry, wouldn't it be better for the EU to treat citizens of non-EU countries as resources to be exploited?
The more disadvantaged the British are by Schengen rules, the more the British will concede to minimise?

Being ready to turn up to such an alliance means being ready (or slightly more ready) for what comes next.

Yes: but Trump's demand was:
A. A pretext to renege on NATO -as evidenced by the fact that each time he demanded greater spending -beyond NATO %, beyond US spending etc.
B. Europe buys US weapons only -which he boasted about supplying obsolete versions & threatened withholding parts & software

Not entirely accurate: the French state, like pretty much every state outside the US, has a health insurance system- which is able to bulk purchase medicines. Because they are big customers, they are able to negotiate very large discounts. Drug companies have a list of countries they go to first

Unemployment affects a few (& me losing my job is a counterfactual anyway).
Inflation affects all.

My wage increases are because of my own skill.
Inflation in prices is because of government failure - etc.
