Artist in Virginia creating hand painted greeting cards and wares that give back to local organizations helping to welcome our refugee neighbors.
Would you believe me if I told you I almost failed the only Art class I took in college? 😂🫠

Up close and personal with some Nike low dunks I was asked to paint last week! TBH this request terrified me - I’ve never painted leather and certainly never painted on shoes.

My hands shook a little bit at first but we kept going! Happy with the final result 🥰

Did you hear about the Italian chef? He pasta away.
Get it? I'll be here all week.
Don't forget to tip your waitress.

We need more good news in our daily lives…

So here is mine for today: I sent over a rough sketch/outline for a house commission and they came back with 0 edits and gave me a green light to start painting.

😲🥰

National parks are important.

Land isn’t being made - land deserves to be preserved.

Our park rangers and our park staff ensure the beauty remains.

Here in VA, I’ll be supporting Shenandoah Nat’l Park - a place we have loved so dearly for decades.

Practice: Leave no trace

Hit the golf course and enjoy local artwork on the score card while doing it! Working with local businesses and non profits makes this job so dang fun.

How it started: frustrated with the administration making “the other” out of our refugee neighbors, I began to make welcome home cards for a local non profit.

7 years, an LLC, and over 75,000 cards painted by hand later… we are still using cards as a way to show welcome to our newest neighbors 🩷

In love with this new packaging sticker/label idea

Playing with surface pattern today for new packaging!

Pretty cool to see my pencil and paper drawings turned into something pretty magical 🙌🏼

Cards that welcome.
Cards that show love.
And cards that create ripples of joy.

I stand with loving our refugee neighbors here in VA, and use my artwork as a way of creating meaningful connections 🩵

Melvin and Emily.

Painting people is something I’ve had to learn to “enjoy the process” over the years. Finding my style and my rhythm is something I look forward to shaping year after year.

The most complicated card to paint but so worth it when the shimmer paint hits the sunlight ☀️

Soooo ready to start seeing green pop through the wintry ground. Feels like seeing that will muster up a little bit of hope for this year 😅

Really proud of creating these palette pieces last year and continuing to make them this year! No two ever come out the same 🥹

32 years later 🎉

Three things that have remained true in my lifetime:

• My love of the outdoors
• My passion for people
• My desire to create

Every single card makes an impact. Refugee women in VA are learning machine sewing skills, practicing English and building community during the Heela Sewing Course this winter 💙
