I watched this film for the first time two days ago. It really gave me a greater appreciation of the man and the actor. And now he's gone.

Raising a glass to Tony Slattery. Much has been said, and rightly, about his comic talent and his improvisational skill. He was also a really properly good actor. I saw him in the West End run of Neville’s Island in the mid-90s and he was dazzlingly good. As he was in Peter’s Friends. Such sad news.

50 years ago, in NYC: Bowie plays "Young Americans" a few times too many for Lennon and McCartney
10 January: Paul and Linda McCartney, en route to record in New Orleans, have dinner with John Lennon and May Pang in New York—with legal battles finally settled (the day before, The Beatles' partnership was formally dissolved by the High Court of Justice in London), McCartney and Lennon feel that they can be friends again, even potentially collaborators. Bowie comes up in conversation, so Lennon calls him to ask if they can stop by his suite at the Pierre Hotel. What follows is one of Bowie's epic humiliations---he insists on playing Lennon, Pang, and the McCartneys an early version of Young Americans over and over again. During its second play, McCartney looks restless and asks "can we hear a different album?" When Bowie spins the album for the third time, Lennon snaps: “It’s great. Do you have any other albums that might be of interest?" Pang puts on an Aretha Franklin record while Bowie leaves the room, nearly in tears. Pang: "He marched out of the room. 'I think you hurt Bowie’s feelings,' I told John."

A couple of years ago, the actor Brian Cox recalled in his autobiography that back in the 1960s, he had worked on a TV drama with the teenage David Bowie. This was news to me, so I decided to investigate. It took a while, but here’s what I found out.
