In 2015, the year before Louisiana expanded Medicaid, the uninsured rate among working-age adults in East Carroll Parish was nearly 35%. By 2021, that number was 12.7%.

“Why are we going back?” provider Jennifer Newton asked. “We’ve made so much progress.”

Also in Greenville, Jennifer Morris, 44, struggles with debilitating headaches from a disorder --hemicrania continua. She gets Medicaid via her disability to pay for her meds. She's worried it could go away. And she certainly needs work flexibility.

Over in Greenville, MS, where the state did not expand Medicaid to adults, April McNair, 45, had a baby 17 yrs ago. She was kicked off right after giving birth. She had complications and got a $2,500 bill.

“I ended up with a significant bill, all bc I did not have Medicaid.”

Residents say they're working as much as they can! Single mom of two, Nevada Qualls, 25, works as a cashier in city hall in Lake Providence. Even a city job can't give her health insurance. So she relies on Medicaid she was able to get through expansion in Louisiana.

Myself and Kim Krisberg at Public Health Watch report across the Delta, people say there are no jobs here, transportation is difficult, and internet access is subpar.

"We have a lot of patients that are one health issue away from either...being bankrupt," said Dr. Brent Smith, in Greenville, MS.
