A longish post. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more truthful book – and nor, therefore, a more humane book than Things in Nature Merely Grow. Yiyun Li’s philosophical and psychic reckoning with the loss of both her sons is soaked in what Graham Greene once referred to as ‘the dignity of despair’. >

The relief. The sheer relief and yes, some unfamiliar national pride- we rejected outright bigotry, fear, greed, suspicion and hatred. So much work to do on climate, Gaza, housing, care for the vulnerable. But the overwhelming rejection of Trumpian wannabes make me teary with relief and pride. 🎉❤️🎉

Pics from my editor this morn. The generous review was online weeks ago but I’m amazed & delighted at this treatment, space & beautiful (gulp 😳🐭) illustrations from @nytbookreview.bsky.social !! Thank you so much Lauren Christensen, NYTBR editors and incredible illustrator Wesley Allsbrook.

I loved hearing from Peter Godwin about his work and how he brings it into being yesterday. Could have listened for hours more. Sydney, his show at SH Ervin will be a highlight of your art year (yes even though it’s only February) - don’t miss it. Finishes March 2!

A joy to meet govt reps who genuinely love the arts, as I did in Delhi last night. Oz High Commissioner Philip Green & his wife Prof Susan Marks hosted us at their residence. Their clear passion for current literature & visual arts was heart lifting. Glorious Christian Thompson & Tamara Dean works.

Fish curry taken from a Rick Stein Indian tv special years ago, scribbled notes while watching so who knows - but it’s our standard fish curry. Tomatoes, heaps onion & curry leaves, tamarind etc. No basmati rice in the house so scrounged some v ancient wild rice from pantry & added some cashews.

Husband made these Adam Liaw fish pakoras. Great, with a beetroot/carrot/radicchio slaw with a sesame dressing.

Remembering and missing our adored friend and beautiful writer Georgia Blain, who died eight years ago today. Can’t believe that. Feels so recent. We love you Georgia, wherever you are.

So sorry everyone but we have to pause enrolments on ELEMENTS OF FICTION – we’ve been absolutely inundated with interest in & sign-ups to this course, which has blown both of our minds!

Now just completely obsessed with Fiona McFarlane‘s Highway 13 – I am so late to read it but she is staggeringly good. The prose – talk about voice! This could be my new favourite book of the year and I’m only one story in.

This morning I spent a beautiful hour listening to @appletwigli.bsky.social on Greene’s Monsignor Quixote, which I read alongside her & many others in A Public Space book club. So fun! I adored revisiting my very, VERY tattered old copy of this beloved book. Yiyun is a genius reader. THANKYOU!
