Researcher. Author. PhD Candidate. Military Personnel Management, CAF culture, toxic leadership. With a sprinkle of intersectionality.

Professional silly goose.

Oh and I work at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, too.
This morning, I had the honour of appearing in front of #NDDN alongside Megan MacKenzie, Rory Fowler, and Michel Drapeau. I've made the (foolish?) decision to share my remarks in the Stackie

Two Office of the Auditor General of Canada reports related to military personnel means 2 stackies in 48 hours. This time, we're digging into military housing:

On the latest DND/CAF 101: sitting with the recent news on hateful conduct in the Canadian Army and Allan English's From Failure to Failure, which explores the history of the CAF's culture change efforts since 2000.

Two and a half weeks in Australia made me reflect a lot about Canadian defence culture and how we tend to shame ourselves into action. My jet lag-fueled writing in my latest Stackie: open.substack.com/pub/dndcaf10...

A fun afternoon at @deakinuniversity.bsky.social’s Centre for Future Defence and National Security testing Rob Engen’s wargame on the invasion of the Dardanelles - definitely a fun intro to wargaming, and the start of a new obsession

I fought a snake, we signed an armistice, and so now I am a PhD candidate.

Now, let’s get to work!

Back in Paris from the NATO Public Forum to The Sister HQ™️ getting ready for a couple of interviews on the NATO summit and the new investment pledges - and working on a stackie by the same token…

In other “I can’t believe this timeline” news, I got a medal now. Cause my employer likes me or something.

New Prime Minister, new Minister of National Defence, same personnel crisis.

We need to see the same enthusiasm for personnel as the one we see for procurement and capability modernization. The hands is in the Cabinet’s, and it goes beyond throwing money at the problem.

With #Elxn2025 around the corner, and all the platforms now published, I thought it'd be fun (i.e., I had to do this for work) to have a read through the defence plans.

TL;DR: pro-defence consensus? across the parties? More than you think!

Is my book a Canadian title now?
March 21, 2025 at 5:25 PM
(6) there is already a lot of people arguing 🇨🇦 spends too much on personnel — I disagree, but we need to look at how we can improve policies and structures to ensure that these investments actually change the game for service members (fin, 6/6)

(3) Every Canadian knows that access to care sucks. Imagine now having to move provinces frequently …

While the CAF has a program called Seamless Canada, I think there is a place for the next PM/ MND to negotiate with the provinces directly.

(1) Housing. The Canadian Forces Housing Agency is too restricted in terms of responsibility. Then, policies by design have made housing unaffordable and too sparse for service members

Last month, the Commander of the Canadian Army published his reading list, and I was honoured to see my book amongst the recommended reads - alongside many incredible authors

Having my work recognized as a worthy read by CADF leaders is really rewarding
