Day 28 #FishyFeb - Fancy
Last one! way overdue, but I didn't want to leave it at 27 out of 28 😅
Decided to finish with a fancy goldfish! I've had so much fun making all sorts of aquatic creatures this past month :D

Unfortunately not going to finish quite on time, but happy to show off a leafy sea dragon, and a very small group of sardines :P
Stay tuned for the last one - I've had so much fun doing this all month!

#FishyFeb Days 24 and 25 - Vibrant, Camouflage
Today we have two hawaiian invertebrates - the imperial nudibranch and the hawaiian bobtail squid! The bonus fact is that the bobtail squid uses bioluminescent bacteria to camouflage at night as well!

Days 22 and 23 of #FishyFeb - Legendary and Ancient
These days feature the oarfish (rare, deep sea, and definitely the source of legends) and the nautilus (been around for over 480 million years, super simple eyes, shells highly desired)

Catching up slowly on these... #FishyFeb Day 24- Deep Sea

Of course, I wanted to feature the anglerfish that was spotted in shallower waters earlier this month. I wonder what it would be like to see sunlight after living in complete darkness..

Day 20 of #FishyFeb - Reef
Todays subject is the reef triggerfish! (or humuhumunukunukuapua'a) the humuhumu is Hawaii's state fish and grunts when threatened.

Day 19 #FishyFeb - Bioluminescence
Flashlight fish have luminescent bacteria in organs that they can flash by covering them with a dark membrane! I had to do an animation for this one!!

Day 18 of #FishyFeb - Angel
Going into the inverts again for this one with a sea angel!
Technically a swimming snail or pteropod, these guys swim using their wings in the deep sea and hunt down other types of pteropods for food!

Days 14 and 15 of #FishyFeb - Bat and Ribbon
Decided to do a combo here to catch up! Featured here are a bat star and moray eel! (i know, a ribbon eel would fit more obviously, but I think other eels count!)
I'm apparently feeling california coast species atm :)

Day 13 of #FishyFeb - Algae Eater
Say hello to the sea hare!
Sea hares are incredibly velvety/soft to the touch, and they also release dark purple ink when threatened.
I'll also count this as my Feb entry for #NearbyNature2025 since they're found off the coast of California!

Day 11 of #FishyFeb - Shark
Decided to do something fun with today's subject, the Pacific Angel Shark! These guys spend most of their time buried in the sand waiting for prey to wander by, so... it was a challenge to figure out how to depict a buried fish!

Day 10 of #FishFeb - Jelly
Meet the spotted or lagoon jelly! Don't have fun facts this time, I just love their polka dots.
February 12, 2025 at 5:54 AM
Day 9 of #FishyFeb - Ray
Today's (well...yesterdays) fish is a bat ray! These rays also live off the coast of California! They like to eat crustaceans, molluscs and small fish that hang out on the seafloor, and can flap their fins to expose their prey.

Day 7 of #FishyFeb - Lion
Today's fish is the lion's mane jelly! (ok, not a fish per se but... its aquatic!) The bell of this jelly can grow to 8 feet in diameter and its tentacles can grow to more than 100 feet long!
I always like to see these guys at Monterey Bay Aquarium :)

Day 6 of #FishyFeb - Gold
Today's fish is the California state freshwater fish - the California Golden Trout! They are related to rainbow trout (but are a separate species) and are native to a few rivers in the Sierra Nevada!

Day 5 of #FishyFeb - Oscar
tbh I hadn't heard of Oscars before today, but my main impression is that they're very pretty, and very fish-shaped!

Got my prints from @fossilforager.bsky.social yesterday! Also, the packing held up nicely (no wet prints!) despite the envelope being completely soaked by the rain yesterday ahaha

Day 4 of #FishyFeb - Cat
Managed to catch up to the actual calendar day! Today's art features striped eeltail catfish! Apparently these guys are marine catfish (and school as juveniles), which is pretty cool to me as I'm used to the common freshwater kinds!
