Charlie's Journey

I have recently learned that I am Autistic. I am sharing my journey of discovery here as a way to safely tell my story. I hope it is helpful to others whose are finding their way along their own paths.
Also, I can look at my notes to see what issues I’d like to discuss at my next therapy session.

I use the #Dailygreatness Journal which is super handy, but all you really need is a notebook and the commitment to do it. dailygreatness.co/collections/...

Highly recommend trying daily reflections.

Today I tell my therapist. I cry. I want to show her the photo, the evidence, the proof of my otherness. She says the photo is not reality. (?!) How did I FEEL at the time? Connected? Joyful? Yes. THAT’S reality. You mean the photo is just 1 of n dimensions? Laughs, yes! ♾️

I hit the road. Drive for hours. Later that night, the photo is shared. I see it. Everyone else pressed together, touching. Me, separated by a gap of space. OTHER.

Two days later, I attend my niece’s college graduation. We get a stranger to take our picture. Five of us with the graduate in cap and gown. We lean in, smiling, joyful. Snap.

One of the questions was whether I "avoid" talking about my childhood experiences with my siblings. No, I said, I don't "avoid" it. There's just no need for it. We all experienced it. What's there to talk about? The interviewer looked right at me, "You ARE avoiding it." Churn, churn, churn.

Just filling out the #PTSD screening questionaire was tough. I had to quit halfway through, and wait several days before I could finish it. Then came the interview. Ugh. It churned up so many memories of things I haven't thought about in forever.

Only the first 2 interviews are guaranteed - they're for #autism. Additional interviews are added if you merit them based on at-home screening tests. I skated through the ADHD and OCD questions; they didn't resonate with me. The #PTSD screening was another story.

“Imagine if society had … denied wheelchair users access to public buildings while insisting that someday, with the help of science, everyone will be able to walk. Viewed as a form of disability that is relatively common rather than as a baffling enigma, autism is not so baffling after all.”

He published his findings in 1944, focusing on 4 so-called high functioning examples, to protect them from the Nazis. His compelling insights were not widely disseminated for over *40 years*. His work was not translated from German to English until 1991.

By then, much harm had been done.
