I'm a creative, but also speak on disability rights & intersectional inclusion and community building. In both fields it's the norm. You can see it reflected in the line ups for events. Not reflecting the diversity of those in the field as the pay situation doesn't make it an equitable opportunity.

The prolific devaluing of the work that goes into presenting/training at events like this is problematic enough in the first instance. But this ongoing cycle which essentially levels up the careers of only those that can already afford it, is brutal.

There's a darker side to this too which I hate. Which is that this culture means that more often only people who can afford to work for free can take the jobs.
Meaning people who already have the access, platform and income, continue to get platformed.
This leaves little room for emerging voices.
