I've now attached a disproportionately large label to it so it'll be easier to spot in future. 🤦‍♀️

I'm having a very Mary Lennox experience - this gorgeous robin has been watching me doing a spot of weeding and swoops down for insects every time I step away.

Of all the things on my bingo card for today, seeing the Old Royal Naval College masquerading as the US Capitol was not one of them. Very surreal and mildly disturbing.

The 'Marie Antoinette Style' exhibition at the V&A is a stunner and well worth seeing if in London. Beautiful clothes and diamonds somewhat juxtaposed by the guillotine said to have killed her, and a book containing her final words written on the morning of her death.

You never know what you'll find in Skoob! This one is coming with me to be added to my Champion bookcase (mostly books he owned, not wrote!)

Brits: complaining about the weather since the year dot - in this case, on 2nd December 1659.

'I stayd at home it being a verie tempestious slabby day.'

This may be my favourite postscript of all time. The author and his son-in-law were being investigated for plotting against Oliver Cromwell in 1656.

'I desire my daughter to send me a Cheese, for this my restraint hath forced me to eate them she sent before sooner then was intended'.

Freshers flu is hitting, and I'm about to spend 2 hours in here with my students. I have water and Strepsils, but I think this is going to be a bit of a mission.

Oxford's looking rather glorious today.

One year of marriage officially completed ✅️

This is very much my kind of landscape. South London is not.

Pilgrimage.

(He actually died in 1659)

I don't hate it at all, but even I will admit that Tesco getting the Christmas stuff out in August is a tiny bit premature...

Dragged the husband to one of my old childhood haunts, Hatfield House. Somehow he'd never been, so we've been very unlike us and have braved our way through the August bank holiday crowds.

Impromptu trip to the ruins of Bishop's Waltham Palace this afternoon - a home of the Bishops of Winchester until the Reformation and a royalist garrison during the Civil Wars, which sadly led to its destruction.

Really fun afternoon getting to wander around Lambeth Palace on a rare open day.

Gotta say, for my first ever sporting event Day 4 of the Test at Lord's was a hell of a way to start! What a rollercoaster.

Tolerable digs at Christ Church, Oxford for the next week. Third year of summer school teaching, here we go!

'He only came in yesterday to sign those. You must be a big fan!' said the gentleman on the till. 😉

As a side note, these are FILTHY.

Interesting revised dating system on this court roll. The clerk has put '8th Chas 2', and someone else has crossed it out and written 'Commonwealth'. All others in the box say Commonwealth, so I'm not sure why this one went awry.
July 2, 2025 at 10:05 AM
I was, perhaps naively, expecting this box to contain a book 🙈

I had a lovely morning giving a tour of Whitehall and Westminster this morning to a group of study abroad students learning about British politics.

Thank God the weather is cooler!

If anyone needs me today I will be re-enacting the Civil Wars in Lego form. Tempted to purchase more soldiers to bulk out the army somewhat ... Also, can confirm regicide re-enactments are possible. Thank you @cromwellmuseum.bsky.social!
