Looked very neat on the network COW, but in Scotland (and presumably Wales and NI?)the option that generated that lower line was used to create the Scotland. So a makeshift 888 from the caption generator had to be keyed on when required, often top right of frame.

Which, in a curious way, reminds me of the time, in 1981, when Terry Wogan introduced me - morning newsreader - with a particularly ridiculous impersonation. Opening words of the bulletin - delivered through suppressed giggles: “A ship laden with dynamite is on fire in the English Channel”
