Has to be The Shining. A perfect example of taking a fantastic book and finding something different in it that not only translates to the screen, but affects the audience in a way they can relate on a human, not just supernatural level. (Yes, he’s obviously barking mad from the start!)

Can I just say that as a hard pressed shop assistant who doesn’t work in an actual bookstore, but in a store with a book section, I thoroughly approve of this practice and engage in it myself.
