Regardless you answer, nice and boring and unfussed. ‘Not anything I’m wearing, no,’ you reply, ‘I did make my work jacket however.’ That gets a surprising amount of buzz. ‘Oh, for real?’ McLaine asks, sounding actually interested. ‘Take orders?’ Judit cuts in, and you hope she’s joking because she definitely means children. And you weren’t fucking helpful.’ ‘I was accurate.’ ‘You looked at me like you’d lost your mind again and just said It’s Kim’s?’ Harry raises a hand to his chest with all the drama of a dying Therrier. ‘Yeah?’ You didn’t know a jacket could cause such chaos. (That’s not quite true. You know Harry still has that Jacket hidden somewhere, and you know it’s going to come out at the strangest moment he can think of.) ‘I am so lost,’ Torson shrugs. ‘Revacholian Aerostatic jackets were reversible,’ you start to explain. Torson leans in, surprisingly eager to hear. McLaine’s tapped out, initial interest depleted. ‘Black outside, orange inside,’ Trant cuts in, finally leaning back a bit, like a teacher starting the next lecture. ‘It was to ease rescue if a pilot went down, they’d turn it out so they were easier to spot,’ he sucks in a breath. ‘High risk though…’ ‘Quite,’ you finish, cutting him off before things get dark. ‘It’s as you say, they weren’t built to be the worn the orange way round. The pockets become impractical, and it’s also not particularly comfortable, the originals use leather for the outside.’ ‘So you made your own,’ Trant finalises. ‘Yes. I like the orange more.’ ‘Do you have an original?’ Judit asks. It’s an obvious question. It still surprises you. ‘Yes. I don’t wear it much,’ you respond, rubbing your neck. Trant whistles. ‘I know museums that would pay good money for that,’ he says. No. It’s the only thing of her’s you have. ‘I don’t think I’ll be parting with it,’ you say instead, looking to Harry in search of a distraction. ‘How are you holding up?’

Heidelstam is the one to move first, a hand coming down to pat Jean on the shoulder, making the man jump, sort of reset. ‘I’m sure he’d enjoy that,’ he grins, more to Jean then you. ‘But lets see how serious he is first!’ (…Jean or Mikiael?) ‘No pressure though,’ he continues, lifting his hand away, ‘everyone else has been putting on quite the show, a veritable roller Dance of Summer.’ You’ve no idea what he just referenced. Your best bet is a ballet or something described in a book bigger than your head. ‘Please,’ Jean laughs. ‘if anything it’s a Banquet of Therriers.’ (That one you do know, a Delorian Age morality play you were forced to read at school. Said banquet ends with the majority of the players dead via a set of tragic misunderstandings and very long soliloquies. You shouldn’t be calling. The day is over, your crossword is done. Your flat is starting to smells like you, not quite as Home as the Kineema, but very close. Here, it’s the cigarette, the false-pine. On the edges of your senses, there’s the remnants of your meal. Bacon, tomato, starch. Further out still, is the rain. Still battering your walls and dragging up the smells of the city. Molecules clinging to each other. The line clicks as it connects. ‘Woman, I said I’d sort it,’ Harry tries to growl. It comes out far to tired. You laugh, a low noise that’s likely eaten by the static before he hears it. The space heater your curled up by hums, a small sanctuary in the tall loft. ‘Gimme twoh shit,’ he sucks in a breath, deep and long. ‘You’re not Maude.’ ‘No, I don’t think I’d suit Maude.’ ‘Kim,’ he sounds… surprised? Slightly cheered? He deflates, the breath crackling in your ear as he loosens. ‘Hi.’ ‘Hello Detective,’ you suck another millimetre off your vice. Know where I am right now?’ The Kitchenette, it’s right above the tenements shared boiler. The tiles are always warm and it’s where the phone hangs. These days it usually smells of basil and rosemary and other spices. He’s fond of garlic, it underlies everything in there. ‘Where?’ ‘Breaking my back on the oven to flatten my face into the counter.’ ‘The counter?’ The oven’s quite far from the phone. ‘Why?’ More noise, the handset rolling around. His voice muffled, squished, when he responds. ‘It’s cold.’ A fog horn in the distance. Boats coming into the harbour. You hear it again a second later, repeated down the wire. There’s ice creeping up your windows, temperature dipping as the night crawls in.

Slightly less successful hole patch. Was a bit too ambitious trying to follow the pattern and keep some moth destroyed purl stitches. But nvm! Saved the square! #knitting
