I can agree with that. I haven't really thought that deeply about preservation of games I've never heard of before till I read your post so thanks for that.

They'll likely agree that even unknown indie games deserve to be preserved, but the preservationist anger you mentioned stems from an existing emotional attachment that is only present in games that they have played.
Sadly it will always be the case that preservation efforts scale with populism.

For most people, preservation is fueled by their nostalgia of good times they've had playing the games in the past. As such, the main bulk of their focus will be on the games/series they've actually played.
