4: Rewatched Robert Zemeckis’ madcap directorial debut “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” New Jersey teenagers scheme to make it to the Beatles’ first 1964 appearance on Ed Sullivan. Was 1978 one of the last years when a low-budget film could afford to license 11 Lennon-McCartney songs for inclusion?

3: 1984’s “Give My Regards to Broad Street,” written by/ starring Paul McCartney (also featuring Ringo.) A very loose plot where Sir Paul’s master studio tapes go missing. The musical scenes are good! But as for the rest of it, among 80s films written by music legends, it’s no “One Trick Pony.”

2: “How I Won the War.” A surrealistic and not very funny 1967 futility-of-war satire seen through the character of a totally incompetent officer.
A prominent part of the supporting cast? John Lennon. Trying to put myself in the shoes of someone seeing this mess in ‘67 “just because John’s in it!”

Steak n Shake used to be a great source of regional midwestern pride (Roger Ebert swore by it!) but after the recent MAGA turn I’ll never go there again. Still have the memories of olden times though

4: Rewatched “Say Anything…”Mostly BLUE poster. If you think the best moment in the movie is the boombox scene, I gotta respectfully say I think you’re wrong. It’s either
A: John Mahoney singing “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” alone in his car, or
B: John Cusack and Ione Skye waiting for the ding

3: “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.” In between releasing “The River” and “Born in the USA,” Bruce faces his childhood family issues, records the MELANCHOLIC “Nebraska” album, and has an emotional breakdown. Speaking as a fan, better than I feared, but you can see how it could have been better

2: “Three Colours: BLUE.” Part of the Kieslowski trilogy that I’ve always wanted to get around to. Juliette Binoche is amazing in a story that’s hard to sum up with a quick tagline. Will definitely try to finish the trilogy. I hear they go back to the Old West in the last one! (Sorry ‘bout that 😳)
