I think with that openness and modularity alone the Steam Frame could really end up being a killer of most other VR headsets on the market unless Meta, Apple, etc. actually change their business model and also turn their devices into freely modifiable VR PCs.

Valve built a fully modular VR PC that could be modified in many interesting ways. Oh and the main compute module could potentially also just be replaced with another more powerful module from competitors which should theoretically be encouraging for anyone caring about the specs of the Steam Frame.

Or another option here could be different specialized camera modules that each only cover one to two camera modes. And something else entirely could be modules to control drones, etc. enabling people to control drones with f.e. the new Steam Controller or the controllers coming with the Steam Frame.

Ok, I guess the disadvantage might be such a modified Steam Frame would become heavier however as the weight would still be balanced this might not be as much of a problem as it is f.e. on the Quest 2.

And as the headstrap with the external battery is also replaceable it would even be possible to replace the battery with a more powerful one to power such a module.

Meaning: imagine sth like the analysis visor from No Man's Sky but in real life & much more powerful. Meaning imagine a camera module with multiple modes from an ordinary colored camera to a thermal camera, to a proper night vision camera, etc. perhaps also in combination with lidar scanners, etc.
