That’s why the quote about the beam & the mote was so frequently used in my childhood. I was surrounded by spiritual people who consistently used whatever they learned to criticize others & RARELY used what they learned to gain self-insight on themselves.

It was a BIG problem in spiritual circles.

Furthermore, with spiritual narcissists, I find that they really only want to be a smidgen more moral than someone else.

They don’t hold themselves to a high standard - they just think: “If I’m a tad better than someone else, then that means I’m moral merely by comparison."

Religious people are often VERY immoral. But they constantly compare themselves to a black sheep nearby who can play the role as a “bigger sinner than they are.”

Deflect from their shame.

Allowing them to continue their self-righteousness without true self-reflection on their own behavior.
