Yet, this would imply that your biface was standing somewhat upright, on its side, which is uncommon: large and thin artifacts tend to lay flat.

Good point re: thinner side and tip. However, I often see this with other artifacts, bone tools and pottery sherds, where a difference of color is best explained by taphonomy as there is no evidence of reworking/rejuvenating. Especially with artifacts at the interface of two different soil layers.
