Just an observation, but people are weirdly intimidated by David Stearns and manifest that feeling in strange ways

4. David Stearns said today this trade opens up their playbook.

Like I don’t understand how DS can constantly tell us what they are thinking about so many people just choose not to believe it or just say “he’s bad bc Ive decided to hate him”

1. It’s the kind of trade that cannot really be measured 1:1. Especially on November 24.

2. There’s a chance Nimmo could crater immediately There’s a chance Semien craters immediately.

3. If that happens, it’s much easier for the Mets to work around Semien than Nimmo.

Was it high risk to re-sign Manaea to a short term, higher AAV deal? Would signing Corbin Burnes been less risky?

The 2024 Mets were likely overly fortunate and the 2024 were likely overly misfortunate.

Can we define high risk? Helsley was the most coveted rental reliever.

Clay Holmes was a win. Canning was a win pre-injury. I personally was lukewarm at best on Montas but I understand the process.

Also the “big expenditure I like is all Steve, the big expenditure I don’t like is all Stearns” thing is annoying

A narrative with DS seems to be “he’s rigid and tries to prove how smart he is.”

I don’t buy that at all.

He’s still learning when/how to fuse small market shrewdness with big market margin for error.

That’s a very narrow line to walk.

And in reality, the Mets can’t really afford for this to last ~months~. Last year they had the Vientos hedge which isn’t really true anymore.

This is similar to degrom, they need an answer relatively quickly to go on with their business.

The problem with the Pete situation now is the Mets aren’t really in position to slow walk it like they did last year. They need clarity pretty quick.

It’s a viable question!

I think we collectively over indexed on winning a WS *THIS* year when they are still very much in the process. They have their foundational superstar, the farm system had a terrific year. The pitching lab is consensus top 5, if not top 2.

There’s so much to feel good about, which is why this sucks.

We’d certainly be a little more normal about it.

The June injuries were season altering. The cavalry arrived and they were still hurt/bad. The offense has always been good enough to win if they stayed in enough games.

Are the Braves in Very Deep Shit?
