Opinions are never wholly one's own, but I'm responsible for mine.
I had never really thought about that before but, yes, this is right: the megachurch must count the sideshow among its ancestors.

I need people better informed than me working out these ideas and doing ethnographic and historical research, though, hence my desire for an anthology.

(I do think the way charismatic church understand and employ the idea of "discernment" is always going to create opportunities for small-scale authoritarianism, though, because it often means that leaders can't admit that they were wrong about who they put in which roles.)

I'd love an anthology with ~12 essays exploring the development of Pentecostal political affiliation. I understand the argument that personal religion (contra public religion) has reactionary origins in the US, but I'm not sure that means it personal religion will always be right-wing in every case.

Now, if we're talking the last meme I *made*, it's this: bsky.app/profile/cerh...

Despite any confrontations you might have seen me engage in, I am uncomfortable with conflict and competition -- perhaps unreasonably so.

I think part of my fixation on Rene Girard comes from this deep discomfort and my reflex of intellectualizing/theorizing things that make me uncomfortable.
November 16, 2025 at 10:02 PM
That's certainly not a complete account of my moral philosophy but "René Girard with laser eyes" is a reasonable description of part of it.

Fascinating.

I bet most of these are alarm guns.

They basically work like starter pistols, having a percussion cap and small charge. If you trigger them they will make a very loud (and often tuned) sound in order to alert everyone in the area.

I understand the math is such that a person born after 2001 could be an adult but, also, everything in my being rebels against the notion.

It looks like I'm not the only one thinking about this today: bsky.app/profile/zing...
No one under thirty has voted in a presidential election where Trump *wasn’t* on the ballot.

*first Trump presidency

I do not know anyone who was a child during Washington's presidency, nor any theoretical earlier presidencies. (Was the US the first to call their head of state a President?)

("Cannot help" was inelegant phrasing. It's not a bad thing at all.)
November 12, 2025 at 9:53 PM
Yeah, there's at least a few. And I mean no insult to the youths. They cannot help having been born after 2000. But I do worry a little sometimes, about the effect this may have on political norms long-term.
November 12, 2025 at 9:52 PM
(People on here who are also in that Discord may want to say, "Christian, that is [redacted] specifically," but I really don't think this a problem restricted to one person.)
November 12, 2025 at 9:47 PM
This makes me wonder what *I'm* missing, as someone whose earliest memories of politics are of the Lewinski affair. (I'm not American, of course, but boy did we still hear about it.) How does that colour my expectations of politics?
November 12, 2025 at 9:47 PM
The issue, as someone else brought up in that server, is that people who were children during the first presidency do not have any comparisons by which to tell how weird even that time was.
November 12, 2025 at 9:47 PM
I love this. It's like Chronicles of Darkness stuff, where if you lose all of your Morality score, you don't die but you do (often) become some kind of monster.
November 12, 2025 at 3:51 PM
Oh, I know how *that* is.
