In which he

1) develops a novel framework allowing the flexible estimation of heterogeneous returns to education as a function of observed and unobserved characteristics

And

2) uses the model to estimate the returns to a university degree as a function of cognitive and non-cognitive ability

Gender:

Girls also remain ahead of boys for both the 4/C and 7/A grades. But boys continue to catch up, especially when it
comes to the top grades.
August 21, 2025 at 11:35 AM
Region:

Eye-watering regional gaps remain too, with London and, to a slightly lesser extent, the South East far ahead of other regions.

There is a 10 point gap between the North East and London in percentage of pupils getting an A or above.
August 21, 2025 at 11:35 AM
School type:

Grammar and independent schools (especially grammar) continue to dominate.

The gap between grammars and non-selective state schools is almost 30 percentage pts for 4/C and above and even bigger for the highest attainers.

Small changes can do little to narrow these enormous gaps.

With results out tomorrow, GCSEs will be in the spotlight this week.

What about HE?

This years impressive A level results have translated into a good year for universities, with more students than ever taking up their firm offers in 2025.

(chart cribbed from @dkernohan.bsky.social & @wonkhe.bsky.social )
August 14, 2025 at 11:46 AM
Gender inequality also growing:

The male-female gap widened slightly in favour of males for A*s – especially compared to 2024.

Small %s but male students do look to be pulling away from girls at the very top.
August 14, 2025 at 11:46 AM
A level results are out! And as many have reported, there was an overall improvement in the proportion of students gaining the top grades.

But its not good news for everyone: with London & the South East continuing to pull away from the rest of the country, and boys slightly ahead of girls.

£168m in new funding for ADR UK means more linked data on schools, outcomes, pay and social care.

Linked data infrastructure may not make headlines, but it underpins CEPEO's work for public good.

👍 A good day for evidence.
👎 A bad day for vibes-based policymaking.

Great to see this: “to make sure that the early years funding system is hardwired to benefit those children and parts of the country that have higher levels of additional need, we will review early years funding, including national funding formulae, and consult the sector on changes by Summer 2026.”

Recognition of the importance of early maths skills, including to meet Plan for Change goal of 75% of children getting a good level of development in the EYFSP by 2028, is something @laouthwaite.bsky.social has championed for many years, which we highlighted in our policy priorities back in 2023
