Perhaps a global cognitive network connecting everyone’s thoughts in real-time—though hopefully less creepy than the Borg in Star Trek. Or augmented reality naturally integrating insights into daily life, like Minority Report or Jarvis in Iron Man.

Maybe brain-computer interfaces instantly delivering answers straight into our minds—just like Neo learning kung fu in The Matrix. Or personalized knowledge assistants embedded directly within us, like Cortana guiding Master Chief in Halo or the cybernetic implants in Cyberpunk 2077.

Then, in the 20th century, we got databases, online directories, and search engines like Google. Now we’re used to asking AI directly and getting instant, conversational answers.

During the Middle Ages, most knowledge was hidden away in monasteries, accessible only if you knew the right monk. Then Gutenberg invented the printing press, books went everywhere, and public libraries became a thing.

I’ve been thinking about how we find information—and how that’s changed over time.

5,000 years ago, we’d just ask an elder or storyteller. Later, we built libraries full of scrolls, like in ancient Alexandria.
