Speaking up for social justice in mental health. Find out more https://www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/
🧵4/4 We’re deeply disappointed that the Plan falls short on mental health. We urge the Government and the NHS to take action now to protect the mental health of people with cancer and their families, and to ensure fair treatment for people with mental illness.

🧵 3/4
People with long-term mental health conditions face twice the risk of dying from cancer, linked to poverty, smoking, poorer health and reduced access to screening. This Plan misses the chance to address this injustice.

🧵 2/4
The Plan welcomes improved psychosocial support for children with cancer, but offers no such recognition for adults. Living with and surviving cancer takes a heavy emotional toll. Failing to invest in mental health support leaves many without essential care at a crucial time.

The updated guideline must:
- align with other updated guidelines and latest diagnostic criteria
- include guidance for addressing barriers to access for marginalised people
- increase therapy options for anxiety
- consider a broader range of evidence for treating anxiety

The Department has stated it will gather views from experts and consider the complexity and sensitivity of this issue. We will scrutinise the Government's plans and hope to see a fair and equitable solution.

Where a person has committed a serious crime while mentally unwell, it's right that they are detained for treatment in a secure hospital and that their victims see justice done. But removing people's benefit entitlements won't help with their rehabilitation, and may make it more difficult.

The DHSC prevalence review will examine rising referrals for mental health, autism and ADHD services. We hope it will spur immediate and concerted action to improve access, experience and outcomes for people seeking support. www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/news/item/ce...

Neurodivergent people in the UK are far more likely to experience mental health difficulties, but the support and treatment of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD are distinct and we must all avoid conflating them.
January 13, 2026 at 12:33 PM
This reflects existing evidence of a rising trend in both mental health needs and help-seeking for neurodevelopmental conditions in recent years, with statutory services struggling to provide the care people need. It's vital that the NHS is funded sufficiently to meet these needs.
