In Amsterdam. Didn’t take many photos at the Max Euwe museum. But this little paperback set is cute.

Second in the Essex U1600 Rapid (4.5/6) and a rating prize in the Essex Blitz (3.5/7) brings my lifetime chess winnings to around £150. A lucrative pro career beckons.

I’m helping start a chess club here in Walthamstow. Anyone in North or East London, you’d be most welcome at our monthly meetup next Sunday 2–5pm (Lord Palmerston, E17 5JN). I’d be grateful for any shares too – we’re eager to ensnare new people in the clutches of this maddening game, etc

So… does this belong on my chess shelf or my philosophy shelves?

I forgot to mention how this went. It was brutal, but I got to witness some fine play. How did my young opponent convert his strong kingside pressure? White to play and kick my ass after like a 40-second think:

Golders Green Rapid, playing up in the U1900s. This could be a long, long day.

11-round open FIDE blitz to finish the year off. I’ve avoided GM Shreyas Royal in the round 1 pairings but inevitably we’ll have to clash somewhere along the line.

Round 1 of the London Chess Classic (U2000): a five-hour marathon with Black against an 1822-rated opponent. Complex Sicilian Alapin that swung both ways. Opponent had winning chances in the ending but I clung on to get a draw.

Chapeau to the publisher of these Romanian stamps, which depict the full smothered mate sequence from multiple angles. Advanced chess player bait.

Round 1 of the Central London Congress and, yeah, I might start exploring alternatives to the QGD.

By some distance the sickest chess set I’ve found in a hotel bar.

Went to the Global Chess League and yep: zero-increment OTB is farcical, not exciting. Even if players weren’t throwing pieces on the floor, e-boards are so poor it’s impossible to know what’s going on.

Still, got to see some proper good players.

*exhales, scribbles on chart* Well, it’s one of the most severe cases of Tiny Piece Syndrome I’ve ever seen

the oldies are the best: 13 …Rxf3! 14 exf3? Qxh2 longmate.

was about to study but my wife insisted we play ‘long chess’ which came to her in a dream

This book continues to be unhinged. Ever seen a musical score offered as a move annotation?

Almost irritated by how much I’m enjoying the Capablanca’s Best Endings book. 39. b4!! against Conde (Hastings 1919) blew my mind.
