Heads up! The brilliant @victoriawhitworth.bsky.social’s Kells book is in Waterstones’ upcoming summer sale. I had the pleasure of engaging with the book when it was being written and it’s splendid - evocative, rigorous, step-changing.

Here’s a Chalcolithic pottery ossuary from Azor, Israel. Used to hold the bones of the dead, this 🏠 house-shaped box was originally painted—its gables and windows decorated and delineated with pigment. 🎨

Held @britishmuseum in Rm 59.

Thinking a lot about hand 👋🏼 placement on sculptures (and in other media) recently during weekly visits to the BM.

Here’s a moving example at the #BritishMuseum, from 2nd c BC Cyprus.

This 11th-century tombstone at #BritishMuseum commemorates a young woman named Fatima, daughter of Ali.

The Arabic inscription (in elegant Kufic script), set within a recessed frame, tells us she died in Aswan, Egypt in 1029.

A verse from the Qur’an requests God’s mercy on Fatima.

And while this isn't a stop on the #BritishMuseum Spotlights tour, I couldn't help but include it! An excellent example of early modern reuse....

Trying to get the hang of uploading Instagram videos (@Sculpturesmith) to Bluesky...

Come with me to explore the wonders of the #BritishMuseum's Medieval Europe Spotlight Tour. I've been a guide for the past year and have really enjoyed engaging with visitors of all ages.

I've decided to attempt a sculpture-focused Instagram (@sculpturesmith). This emerged after spending the last year leading tours of sculpture in the British Museum. I'll try my best to include as much geographic, temporal, and material breadth as possible. If you're interested, have a follow!

In the wake of the horrors of the US election, I've migrated completely over to here. Goodbye, X/Twitter. Hello, Bluesky community 👋

Enjoy some new #earlymedieval sculpture found on Lindisfarne in September!
