His biggest contribution to society had been a grasp of the future of technology (but not the technology) and willingness to throw huge sums of money at those technologies when no one else would. He used to hire bright people and stay out of their way.

Musk is almost as big a sack of rocks as Trump, and frightfully more coherent and competent. I've been watching him for over a decade, and he's an absolute mess.

Good question. Not sure if that's a more comforting model than we're just bags of chemistry getting in the way of being our spiritual selves, but maybe.
