Spent a little more time on the D90 repair project. Every step in the process is a new level of 🙀💦

Fixing the aperture actuator basically means total disassembly.

If I get that working again, I’ll pull the IR filter off and make it a full spectrum camera.

If not, I got it for $25 so NBD 😺

Sunset was pretty today on the way to Bremerton

Good day for a ferry trip.
A photo of calm waters from the Seattle-Bremerton ferry, at Sunset in the longer portion of Rich Passage. The frame is divided in half by a black shoreline in shadow, thickening to either side of the center with forested hills. The sky is a orange color at the horizon, with a few light, long clouds taking on the same hues. The colors fade to a sky blue in the middle, and then a browner, hazy tint towards the top. The water has light ripples, taking on the hues of the sky at the shoreline and mirroring them to the bottom of the frame.

I tried a higher-contrast label, the phone didn’t really do any better.

A real camera a hobbyist or journalist would have though? 600mm at 50 feet, it’s /crystal clear/. Couldn’t scan it, but the contents are all there in human-readable text.

This is the longest shot I can take inside my house.

I’ve been seeing a lot of FUD about QR codes for identifying officers. You don’t need apps, and never QR only!

iPhone 15 Pro Max, 25x at a distance of 33 feet.

The phone wouldn’t scan, but you can still read the badge no.! I was also able to use a barcode scanner to read the QR off my phone.
A mockup patch taped onto an arm-ish-size round object to simulate a shoulder patch, with a plaintext copy of the QR code contents. That’s a 4” x 3” patch.

Currently, Steller's jays! Specifically this one!

I call him Buddy, because he will come closer than any of the other jays that visit for peanuts, and he doesn't scream at me either!

They're a very pretty blue and black, the eyebrows and crest are really neat!

One of the black-tailed deer that visits the backyard during the summer to steal our apples.

She has long whiskers and eyelashes around each eye, and a set of longer, thicker whiskers around the bottom of her jaw. Her coat is a uniform brown-red on her back, the top of her muzzle and ears are more salt-and-pepper colored, blending to red on the cheeks and tan on the underside of the neck.

A red-tailed hawk has been hanging lately, they like to perch on the tip-top of one of the nearby trees.

At 150ft away they're at the limit of what I can do with my 150-600mm lens on the 2x extender (1200mm for this shot). It's okay!

Went to @nwtrek.bsky.social this weekend to see their American pine marten, Syaʔyaʔ. She's adorable!

One paw is only barely out of focus, four bright and sharp claws clearly visible; her other paw disappears into shadow except for the claws.

Today here's a golden weaver from the Woodland Park Zoo
A golden weaver, a bird of golden-yellow hues with a dash of red atop his head, hangs upright between two small branches, one in each foot, they've pulled together to begin constructing a nest. Their right foot (on your left) clutches a piece of tough, dry grass, pinning it in place as he weaves the strand with his black beak around the branch on his left.

AAAAAAAAAA I finally got to see our resident bobcat today AND I GOT A PHOTO!

My roommates have both seen them in the area for the last year and a half, but I've never been in the right place at the right time for it until today!

Look at them!

One ear's tuft is visible, highlighted against their back, and their black tipped tail stands moderately erect.

A snow leopard at the Woodland Park Zoo from earlier this summer. They're giving you a LOOK
A snow leopard cub stalks you through a black chain-link fence, staring intently at you as one paw is held raised, mid-step. They have a black nose and dozens of small black spots across their face, and a rosette here and there, and silvery-grey fur.

Here's a lil guy today! A Townsend's warbler caught a spider for a little autumn snack.
A Townsend's warbler perches in a Norwegian Maple, a small orb weaver spider captured in their beak, amidst red, yellow, gold, and green leaves in early autumn. The bird has a grey-yellow patch around their eye and on top of their head, with a bright yellow brow and cheek, and their grey-black wings have white edges on their feathers and a pair of white bars on their upper wing.
