Marine wildlife biologist, living on the shore of, and working for the protection and restoration of the Salish Sea in WA State. Minke whale researcher; Connector; San Juan Islander.
An afternoon on the shores of the Salish Sea with a loon, a harbor seal, gulls whirling. A distraction of the chaos and a reminder of what I’m working for. For a Salish Sea for my children, for their children, and generations into the future. Let’s make it so.

No NOAA no Seafood…. And all the other things that NOAA provides. Living in a county of islands with the most shoreline of any county in the contiguous United States we absolutely rely on the services provided by NOAA!
I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies.

There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

The arts and the sciences go hand in hand… says the scientist who married the artist 💙🌊
I run workshops at FHL beneath a paper maché sperm whale covered in the pages of moby dick that was created at similar marine arts and science workshop. It is my favorite place to host colleagues.
Calling scientists and artists, Friday Harbor Labs hosts the Marine Arts & Science workshop on July 6-27, 2025.

Help address the ocean emergency and bring a project or idea to develop, or be inspired to start a new one.

Apply by March 1.

This important work needs all of us, working together, bringing different strengths, ideas, science, and tools. #bettertogether #betterfortheSouthernResidents
On this World Whale Day, The Whale Museum is honored to continue the fight for SRKW recovery alongside our whale community. Working together is more important than ever in the face of uncertain federal support. You can help The Whale Museum today by donating at: whalemuseum.org/products/mak...

World whale day 🐋💙 at a time when whale populations need our help the most, especially those struggling to recover like the #SouthernResidentkillerwhale
Today the world celebrates World Whale Day! First celebrated in Maui in 1980 as a way to raise awareness for Humpback whales, the day has since spread across the world. It’s a day for reflection, for joy, and for celebrating the strength and resilience of these amazing animals.

Little J62 is female. This is a big deal for this struggling population. May she not only survive, but thrive 💙
We got out with J Pod for our 6th encounter of the year! We were able to confirm that J62 is female and document all 26 members! We were also able to confirm that J35 is no longer carrying the carcass of J61. Check out the encounter and more photos at the link below.

Also… don’t paddle around feeding whales!! They’re pretty oblivious to your presence. Get out their way and let them do their whale thing!!
I heard that some of you people prefer to receive your snarky science fact-checking of viral news stories in meme format, and I am here to help.

The @washingtonpost.com has also picked up the story:
Staff members at a division of NOAA have been told this week to stop all contact with foreign nationals, including on international treaties and seafood catch limits

Scientists on alert after some NOAA staff ordered to stop talking to people overseas
At other branches of NOAA, international contact was facing heavy scrutiny, raising questions about how easily scientists could carry out work to monitor weather and atmospheric conditions.

In 2023 we negotiated a contract for our @afscme.bsky.social represented employees with San Juan County that included a 32 hr work week and fair COLAs… shame that CBS didn’t bother to learn how county employees (represented and unrepresented) won the 32 hr work week.

County workers wanted a pay hike, but got a 4-day workweek instead. Here's what happened.
San Juan County in Washington State didn't have the funds to give workers a raise, so they had to get creative.

For the transboundary Salish Sea this will have hugely detrimental effects, and not just here but globally!
NOAA Employees Told to Pause Work With ‘Foreign Nationals’
An internal email obtained by WIRED shows that NOAA workers received orders to pause “ALL INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS.”

Day 2 of the Seattle Boat Show with Be Whale Wise. Chatted with over 200 boaters today and handed out over 80 #whalewarningflags. And laughed so hard with these two that I cried! 🐋🩵🐋

Senior scientists who will be reviewing tenure & promotion files in the future - please remember that the effects of many of these executive orders will disproportionately affect researchers from marginalized groups - often the same folks penalized by COVID-related delays, childcare issues, etc. 🧪

No, Offshore Wind Isn’t What’s Killing Whales
Politicians and nonprofit groups have blamed offshore wind turbines for whale deaths, but the science doesn’t support those claims—at all
