An economic indicator causing concern is the CAPE ratio (Cyclical Adjusted Price/Earnings). It applies to the entire S&P 500 index and is now higher (almost 40) than at any time since the millennium says Liz Ann Sonders, Chief Investment Strategist at Charles Schwab.

Nokia stock (NOK) rose 10% today, to above resistance at 5.7 that's held almost 10 yrs. The company reported rising demand (+28%) from AI and cloud customers, for network infrastructure. CEO Justin Hotard said on a call. “We’re still at the very early innings of . . . a tremendous AI super cycle.”

The largest 50 stocks in the S&P 500 index now trade at 26x expected current-year earnings; 33% above the norm since 2004.
Over the last 12 months, they delivered profit growth of 14%. That compares to 6.8% for all S&P 500 stocks, 5.5% for the S&P 400, and 2.2% for S&P 600 stocks.

AI needs solar: New AI superclusters will require vast amounts of power. Nvidia’s Rubin Ultra AI server (2027) will draw 600 kW per rack (a home uses 2–5 kW). First, more than a third of tipped workers don’t make enough to pay any federal income taxes. For those that do benefit, total income is limited to $150k ($300k MFJ) and then capped to $25k of tip income. The law sunsets in 2028 but will likely have enough bipartisan support to be extended.
President Trump promised “no tax on tips,” but for some workers, the details in the megabill say something else.

I had reservations about this album following weeks of perpetual reposts on ‘X’. But after listening to the whole album for the first time, I think this is Orianthi’s best album to date. I’m looking forward to seeing her perform in the Chicago area again this Fall.

At the Chicago Blues Festival on Sunday saw impressive performances from several Chicago blues veterans. What grabbed my attention was a younger less-known artist, Keya Trammell, who sang the national anthem. Her introduction starts at 1:45:00 into the stream.

This Memorial Day weekend SiriusXM’s Classic Vinyl channel is periodically repeating the top-50 albums from 1975, as voted by “Super Listeners.”
Of the twenty or so albums in my collection from that year only four overlap. My tastes are obviously quite different.

Dow Theory Forecast, 5/14/2025: Stocks have surged on easing trade tensions, with both the Dow Industrials and Transports recovering all ground lost since "Liberation Day" (April 2). While encouraged by the broad advance, we're inclined to view it as a bear-market rally.

Hey JD Vance! At the GOP convention last summer, Trump offered to cover the cost of in-vitro fertilization to project the GOP as being family friendly. But for such a program to work, couples must still want and be able to afford raising kids. Otherwise, we can only expect more cat ladies.
