I have avoided Deliveroo for years, every since they did that to me and I _did_ end up paying for two takeaways.

Dare I ask what tech they use? I've experienced some pretty poor laundry tech in the past, so interested to hear what this lot use!

Too bad half the comments seem to be people saying stuff like "software isn't engineering because the government didn't regulate it".

Ha, first Rob and now *you* are on the front page of Hacker News. (No comments yet, but watch out, it's only a matter of time...)

That's easy, you can even see it (in tiny letters) underneath the bit that says Ocean Machine...

I hope their customers really appreciated all of that code!

You, sir, are at the top of the front-page of Hacker News right now. An excellent achievement. (Just don't read the comments...)

It's worse than that. A lot of good ideas in software development are counter-intuitive. I remember when I discovered git branches. They were awesome. If someone had told me back then that it would be more effective to forget about them and go back to pushing to trunk... I wouldn't have believed it!

Did you find out how good the LLM was at code inspection in the end?

Sorry to hear it has gone Pete Tong. Hope it ends up ok. And yes, definitely up for catching up soon

Very good to (briefly) see you, Jason.

Ginger has occasionally attempted to emulate Devin's music e.g. The Wildhearts' Endless Nameless album, or his solo Mutation albums, which are not-subtly inspired by Strapping Young Lad. But I don't hear Devin's influence in most of The Wildhearts' output. What do you pick up on?

Great album. It does still amuse me how much Resolve sounds like Vanilla Radio by The Wildhearts (which apparently Devin admitted to inadvertently bring inspired by). I think I probably prefer Resolve, though, and I say that as a Wildhearts fan.

Noob question, what is meant my PR in this context? Public relations? What sort of policies do large companies tend to have, and what does it take to navigate them?
September 17, 2025 at 1:22 PM
Dare I ask what you do?

See if there's anything we want to refactor.

(Possibly commit first if scared the refactor will break something and will be a pain to undo.)

And I'd argue that it only got them because certain non-mainstream languages with those features were starting to get popular.
August 22, 2025 at 9:55 AM
Maybe so, but it's only recently that certain mainstream languages started getting some of the features that have been around for decades. For example, Java has lambdas/closures/higher order functions, but it only got them around ten years ago.

Point taken that tools, libraries etc are important, but I worry that if we waited for all of that stuff to be ready, we'd never get any new languages at all.

I love hearing people say "TDD is bad because it forces you to write every single test before you write any production code at all!"
