Such a phenomenon can’t be effectively addressed until people understand this affective appeal and the strong emotions underlying the ensuing loyalty. Nothing he does will ever matter to them because he gave them purpose and community.

It is emotional bliss, reveling in nostalgia with those who share their same fears and insecurities. Everyone else is to blame for their lack of fulfillment and existential sadness. Trump gave this to them, and will be forever thankful to him.

This unified ideological direction led by Trump provides MAGA with the intoxication of genuine community that they may have never felt. They are finally a part of something bigger than themselves.

Trump is the physical avatar of these fears. He provides MAGA with an out to this existential despair—an enemy that must be combatted. MAGA is not bad for refusing to accept change; those who herald such change are the true evil.

As the supremacy of the individual espoused by our liberal democratic order slowly erodes social capital, this nihilistic rage grows. MAGA is angry and confused, and doesn’t have the emotional capabilities to understand why.
