Preserving the hardware and spirit of America's ventures into space. Page administered by the U.S. Space Force Historical Foundation, Inc.
Snapshots from a favorite tradition, our Holiday Dinner, sponsored by the U.S. Space Force Historical Foundation. We celebrated awards, honored five volunteers we’ve lost, and thanked the 100+ volunteers who power our mission. Happy Holidays. Semper Supra!

🎄🚀 Rupert Report from orbit! Rupert the Space Armadillo is circling Earth with astronaut Mike Finke and Crew 11 aboard the ISS. Fun fact: they’ll see Christmas Day about 16 times in 24 hours. Holiday cheer at orbital speed! 🌍✨

Happy Wright Brothers Day! ✈️ On 17 Dec 1903, flight was born at Kitty Hawk. Just 47 years later, rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Our museum was once called “the Kitty Hawk of the Space Age.” From wings to rockets, the Cape remains the world’s gateway to space. 🚀

Happy International Monkey Day! 🐒🚀 Before humans flew, monkeys led the way. On May 28, 1959, Able & Baker launched from Cape Canaveral’s LC-26 aboard a Jupiter missile, becoming America’s first successful animal spaceflight. #museums #MonkeyDay

The Titan I trail runs from Denver to the Space Coast. One rare R&D Titan I debuted at Denver’s Civic Center in 1959, then moved east to Patrick AFB. After decades in Florida’s salt air, it vanished. That path explains why ours may be the last R&D Titan I left.

Check out our new temp display on Space Coast author Martin Caidin at the Sands Space History Center. His books helped shape how a generation imagined spaceflight. We’re marking the release of a new Caidin documentary, with a screening planned in the new year!

Mission update for young space fans. The Sands Space History Center got a fresh upgrade and is packed with launch history. We’re open 6 of 7 days a week. Remember it as “6-7.” Turn your hands into launch pads and send 6-7 soaring. Ask your parents to bring you by! 🚀

On this day in 1964, the last ASSET vehicle launched from Cape Canaveral. These small uncrewed reentry bodies gathered data for the X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane program. You can see one of these rare test vehicles up close at the Sands Space History Center.

Rupert the Space Armadillo checked in from the ISS. Up there, staying strong is no joke. Astronauts work out about 2.5 hours a day to battle muscle & bone loss in microgravity. With specialized equipment, Rupert’s keeping those tiny space muscles in top shape. 🚀💪 #space #FollowRupert

Records suggest our Titan I isn’t just rare. It may be the last surviving R&D Titan I ever displayed and possibly the oldest one still standing! Its serial number tells the story. More clues coming soon. 🕵🚀 Check out more details here - www.linkedin.com/posts/james-...

Eighty years ago today, PBM-5 Mariner 59225 lifted off from Banana River NAS to search for five missing aircraft from Fort Lauderdale, later known as Flight 19. Neither the searchers nor the lost squadron were ever found. Today we remember their service and their sacrifice.

Gemini 2, the US’s first reused spacecraft, has been on display in our Exhibit Hall since 1969. It flew for NASA in 1965 and again for the MOL program in 1966. Early visitors asked to see a real capsule, and Smithsonian answered. A quiet pioneer in reusability. #museums #space

Happy National Absurdity Day! On 21 Nov 1960, Mercury-Redstone 1 lit, rose four inches, shut down, and the escape tower launched itself. The capsule ended up sitting on the booster like a parade float. A perfect early-space blooper.

Rupert the Space Armadillo is still holding the fort on the ISS. Even through the shutdown, he kept floating, exploring, and loving microgravity.

While he racked up the miles, the ISS hit 25 years of continuous human presence on Nov 2!
